A Celebration of Brian Smith's Life

SNR faculty, staff and students gathered April 22 on the north side of Hardin Hall with Brian Smith's family to dedicate the memorial tree and two bird feeding stations. The school also presented a dedication plaque to his family.

Student commemorated with tree planting ceremony and bird feeder dedication

A celebration of Brian Smith's life took place on Tuesday, April 22, 2008, on the north side of Hardin Hall, East Campus, University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Many School of Natural Resources (SNR) faculty, staff and students attended the ceremony. The event included a tree planting ceremony and bird feeder dedication.

Speakers included Don Wilhite, SNR director; Ed Harvey, SNR associate director; Larkin Powell, SNR associate professor; and Steve Waller, College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources dean.

Brian, a sophomore Fisheries and Wildlife major, died on Saturday, March 15, during an SNR course in Puerto Rico. Funeral services were held March 26, in Omaha, Nebraska. He was on the Dean’s List of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources and was a 2006 graduate of Creighton Prep (Omaha, Nebraska).

Memorial Fund Established

The Brian M. Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established to provide scholarships at Creighton Prep High School (Omaha, Nebraska) and to the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Those wishing to contribute should contact the University of Nebraska Foundation.
